Security researchers have discovered that a person can hack Linux distribution by tapping the backspace key 28 times in a row. It sounds strange that now anyone can easily hack Linux by tapping a button for several times.
In Spain, a team from the Cyber security Group at Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) found that doing so works for builds utilizing the ubiquitous Grub2 bootloader. They recognized that after pressing backspace button for 28 times, which resulted in immediately bypassing the lock screen, it initiates the “Grub rescue shell” and grants the user access to the system for whatever disreputable things they have in mind.
The team also found that the backspace trick activates a memory error which launches the rescue shell in turn. But this bug isn’t a huge threat because a hacker would need to physically sit down in front of the PC to access your machine in order to hack it. Now Ubuntu, Red Hat, and Debian have all released patches to rescue Linux from hacking.
It seems that even though these operating systems are made with the intention of offering something that big name companies cannot, at the end of the day, they are still being made by people who can make errors just like anyone else. This goes to show that it is important to maintain a certain level of personal vigilance and security.
